Abstract
Famines have been an integral part of the historical development of civilisation. In the Latin American countries of Nicaragua and Mexico famine was worshipped as a deity 1). In South Asia it features in the Ramayana 2). The earliest oral histories in the Western World tell us that Pandora let famine out of her box which contained the evils associated with technological development3). Later in Biblical times St. John saw famine as part of the apocalypse 4). In the final quarter of the 20th century, nine countries each year are still reported as suffering a food crisis (see front cover) and the famines of Kampuchea, Ethiopia, Uganda, the Sahel and Southern Africa still seem to be part of our civilisation.
