Abstract
Carbopol (TM, B.F. Goodrich Co.) resins are synthetic, acidic polymers, utilised within the pharmaceutical industry in topical formulations due to their ability to form gels in suitable solvents with the aid of certain neutralising agents. Systems containing different neutralising agents and co-solvents were prepared to assess the changes in consistency with each formulation. The viscosity in these systems was measured using the flow package on a Carri-Med CS Rheometer, a controlled stress instrument. This rheometer was found to give comparable results to those obtained with controlled shear instruments. Carbopol gels have a maximum viscosity over a particular pH range when neutralised with sodium hydroxide, and within this range addition of different co-solvents up to a maximum concentration of 40 to 50% increases the system viscosity.
