Late Results after Primary Repair

  • Chapter
The Knee and the Cruciate Ligaments

Abstract

The value of surgical repair of the acutely torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) remains controversial despite numerous studies (Feagin and Curl 1976; Feagin et al. 1972; Hughston and Barrett 1983; Järvinen and Kannus 1985; Liljedahl and Nordstrand 1969; Liljedahl et al. 1965; Lysholm et al. 1982; McDaniel and Dameron 1980; Marshall et al. 1979,1982; O’Donoghue 1955; Palmer 1938; Solonen and Rok-kanen 1967). Marshall et al. (1969, 1971) showed in their experimental studies that degenerative articular changes are a sequela of ACL insufficiency. Fetto and Marshall (1980) reported on clinical findings documenting the necessity of the ACL as a primary stabilizer of the knee joint and emphasized the importance of early, primary operative repair of ACL rupture. The progressive functional disability resulting from degenerative joint changes and secondary meniscal tears in the ACL-deficient symptomatic knee has been further documented by Noyes et al. (1983).
