Evidence for a Change in Atmospheric Circulation during the Younger Dryas

Abstract

Bulk major and trace element ratios from deep sea cores have been used to infer the intensity of aeolian transport over the past 30ka. Evidence from a high sedimentation rate core (ODP 658) suggests that wind speeds were more vigorous during the glacial. They also intensified during the brief Younger Dryas event, implying a short lived global reorganization in atmospheric circulation at this time. Cool sea surface temperatures resulting from increased trade wind driven upwelling along the N.W. African margin provide further evidence for increased wind vigour during the Younger Dryas.
