Zusammenfassung

Alexis de Tocqueville lässt sich weder eindeutig als liberaler Denker des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Tradition John Stuart Mills, noch als republikanischer Denker à la Jean-Jacques Rousseau klassifizieren, weswegen ihm in der Ideengeschichte bisweilen das Etikett eines »strange liberalism« (Boesche 1981) verliehen wurde. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Debatte um neue, republikanische Konzeptionen von Freiheit, welche die von Isaiah Berlin prominent lancierte Unterscheidung zwischen positiver und negativer Freiheit zu überwinden suchen, erscheint jedoch Tocquevilles ambivalente Position überaus aktuell.
