Abstract
Treatment of early breast cancer continues to evolve toward targeted systemic therapy and minimally invasive procedures. Breast-conserving surgery is a safe approach for most patients but does have some morbidity. Therefore, percutaneous ablation techniques are being evaluated for the treatment of early breast cancer and may provide lower complications. However, patient selection is critical in determining which tumors will have complete ablation. Review of the most common percutaneous ablation techniques, suitable tumor histology, complications, and short-term recurrence outcomes is discussed. Limitations in pre- and posttreatment imaging, evaluation of real-time ablation, and identification of appropriate patients still exist but may improve with imaging advancements. Special consideration for using percutaneous ablation in select clinical situations is also discussed. It is possible that percutaneous ablation techniques such as cryoablation may become an effective treatment option for nonsurgical management of early breast cancer.
