Abstract

This research analyses in depth the project of one of the most representative work of the Modern Architectural Movement in Sicily – the Scuola Officina Meccanica, located in Villaggio Monte degli Ulivi, in Riesi (CL), designed by the architect Leonardo Ricci between 1962 and 1968. The main objective is to contribute to the conservation of the architectural work through its analysis and study for a careful and conscious restoration. The research methodology aimed to retrace the compositional and geometric principles that defined the design process and its unique configuration.

Notes

  1. 1.

During the 60s, Leonardo Ricci was involved in several professional activities, both involving research and teaching for the Faculty of Architecture in Florence, as well as for some North-American Universities.

  2. 2.

We refer to some statements made by Leonardo Ricci regarding the construction of Villaggio, his work, and his method, featured in a short documentary by BBC titled A pair of eyes (1971). This was also covered in an interview with one of his collaborator architect Guido Del Fungo, as part of a doctoral research.

  3. 3.

The study on the planimetric distribution of the ground floor in relation to the internal and external views, reveals a layout of the space like the one inspired by Le Corbusier’s promenade architecturelle, as well as the panopticon. The sequence of viewpoints is related to both the circular space and the movement of the observer inside it. The building has also several openings on the wall surfaces, allowing the view towards the other buildings and the main areas of the village.

  4. 4.

It is known that, an oval is a poly-centric line, symmetric on an axis. It is constructed from joined arcs, featuring the tangents on the ends of the chord perpendicular to them, and a tangent on the vertex parallel to the chord. The number of centres is always odd.
