Abstract
All medications we use today come from somewhere, and not all were developed in modern laboratories. Trees, plants, and even flowers were common sources, many antibiotics came from soil, and even fungi have yielded drugs we use today. This chapter tells the stories of some of our most useful remedies—opium derivatives, ergot, quinine, barbiturates, aspirin, penicillin, and more—with tales of the interesting twists and turns on their way to clinical acceptance.
