Definition

Rissho Kosei-kai (Society for Establishing Righteousness and Friendly Relations) is a neo-Buddhist organization of Japanese origin within the wider spectrum of Nichiren Buddhism.

Key Information

Rissho Kosei-kai (RKK) was founded on March 5, 1938, by Nikkyo Niwano and Myoko Naganuma. It is a new religious entity based on Nichiren Buddhism and can be regarded as an offshoot of the Reiyukai. According to the group, the schism was based on doctrinal reasons, as the Reiyukai preached the repetition of the sacred mantra, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, while the two founders held that salvation was not possible unless one’s life accords with the teachings and unless a person improves the quality of his personality. The group describes its purpose as an organization for the learning of everlasting universal truth as Sakyamuni preached and for the practicing in order to achieve a happy home life, a good society, and a peaceful world.
