Abstract
In this chapter, I reflect on the challenges and opportunities of hybrid scholarship through a retrospective assessment of my interdisciplinary narrative analysis approach. My project compared the linked social, environmental and political dynamics on the Bulgarian Black Sea and Yorkshire North Sea shores. I drew on a series of narratives in each context, derived from participant interviews, media articles, historical documents and literary texts. To analyse them, I developed a narrative approach situated between the social sciences and humanities. This chapter describes my approach to working with narratives and outlines the epistemological and institutional challenges I encountered. In this way, the chapter offers an insight into narrative analysis methods and some potential benefits and solutions for conducting interdisciplinary research on the coast.

Notes
- 1.
There exists a wealth of research on the distinction between multi-, trans- or interdisciplinarity in hybrid research (see, for example, Klein 2010 or Lury 2018) but this discussion is beyond the scope of my chapter. I refer to my own work as either ‘hybrid’ in the general sense or as ‘interdisciplinary’ because of the focus I place on integrating, linking and blending approaches across and between disciplines.
