Abstract
Climate change mitigation requires assessment of both the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a country as well as the effectiveness of renewable energy (RE) resources and technologies in reducing (or avoiding) these emissions. GHG inventories can be calculated using the well-known IPCC 2006 guidelines. The technique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides a means of (amongst other things) carrying out detailed calculations of GHG emissions associated with the production and use of RE. This chapter provides a brief introduction to the technique of LCA and its use in the evaluation of RE-related GHG emissions. It begins with a simple case study that demonstrates the need for LCA in RE assessment. It next outlines the main features of the LCA technique, and ends with a brief description of LCA software available as freeware or commercially on the market.
