Abstract

Malignant lymphoma usually arises from the haematopoietic cells of B- or T-cell origin, and only rarely from the reticular supporting cells of the bone marrow and lymph nodes. It is one of the rapidly increasing malignancies with a more than 50% increase in incidence over the past 15 years. This is due to several predisposing factors such as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, either due to HIV infection or following the use of immunosuppressive drugs for organ transplantation; other predisposing factors include pesticides, previous radiation exposure and viral infection. The course of the disease differs significantly in adults and children.
