Abstract

The majority of the signaling systems in use in telecommunications use channel-associated signaling. The repertoire of signals has increased over the years with the most modern signaling systems including signals which transfer information backwards from the called side. Each successive system has built on the experience of its predecessors, and recent systems have included network and administrative signals. The earlier signaling systems, most of which will be in use for some time, may be augmented by the common channel systems described in the next chapter for new applications. Associated-channel systems have reached the peak of their development. The systems are described in the order of their development. The line signaling and register signaling portions of the system are described using their ccitt designations.
