Abstract

An information retrieval system takes a user query and a database of texts and classifies the texts according to how relevant they are to the query. Information retrieval techniques can themselves be classified according to several dimensions. One of the most useful distinctions depends on when a text is processed: during initial entry, or during retrieval request (query).
