Abstract

A reservoir of leishmaniasis is a system including sandflies and mammals required for the long term persistence of the parasites. The system contains one or more sandfly species — the vectors, and one or more mammals — the reservoir host. Other mammals may become infected but if they are not required for the long term survival of the parasite, they are incidental hosts. Incidental hosts may well be important as liaison hosts, bring the parasite into contact with man.
