Abstract

Preoperative portal embolization allows a reorientation of the portal vein flow from the segments to be resected towards the future liver remnant (FLR). This results in hypertrophy of the preserved segments and increase in the hepatic reserve. Thus, the number of patients eligible for an extended hepatic resection has increased, and the rate of postoperative complications has diminished.
