Abstract

One must distinguish “H as a symptom” (small or moderate blood loss, sometimes over several days) and “H as a disease”, which can be life-threatening: small but recurring H or massive H (more than 100 or more than 400 cc per day, depending on the authors). The risk of death is due to asphyxiation secondary to intra-alveolar hemorrhage rather than exsanguination.
