Abstract

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) occurs in the 24 h following birth. It is defined by a blood loss equal or greater than 500 ml in the case of a vaginal delivery, or greater than 1,000 ml in the case of cesarean sections. It is considered as severe when the loss is more than 1,000 ml. An early diagnosis therefore depends upon a rigorous quantification of the loss in each collecting pouch. PPH is the leading cause of maternal mortality in France, among which 2/3 of evitable deaths.
