Abstract
By the end of this chapter you will be able to:

discuss different approaches to the concept of consciousness;

describe altered states of consciousness and their implications;

understand the relationship of biorhythms to pyschological states;

describe the physiological processes involved in sleep; and
-
outline theories which attempt to explain why humans sleep.
