How to access the common bile duct after failure of standard canulation: Focusing on different alternative techniques of biliary canulation

Acta Endoscopica

Abstract

The standard canulation allows access to the common bile duct (CBD) in 80–95% of cases. Whatever the expertise of the endoscopist, in 20% of the cases access to the CBD is considered difficult. The purpose of this literature review is to identify the causes of a difficult canulation of the CBD and give the various techniques for accessing the CBD after failure of standard canulation. This literature review was performed excluding the techniques of biliary drainage by endoscopic ultrasound.
