Abstract
Differentiation of biotypes of fungi isolated from patients with mycoses is a powerful tool for investigating the epidemiology of fungal infection. Functional biotyping systems based on morphologic, physiologic, serologic, and genetic approaches are well standardized for many pathogenic viruses and bacteria; but few standardized systems have been devised for pathogenic fungi. The purpose of this chapter is to describe biotyping methodology in medical mycology and to summarize some of the epidemiologic information that has been gained from fungal biotyping.
